Akil Daley – Barbados
Akil Daley is a distinguished graduate of Wesley Hall Infants and Junior School. He was a Wesley Hall school choir member, a Cub Scout Sixer, a school band, and a table tennis team member.
He then graduated from Christ Church Foundation, where he crafted many more sporting and intellectual talents. He represented the Foundation in cricket, lawn tennis, basketball, and debating. After achieving 7 CXC’s he graduated from the Barbados Community College, where he achieved an associate degree in political science and law. He served as President of the Political Science Association and the Debating team. He was awarded best rebutter in a debating competition in 2001 and best overall debater in 2002. He also was awarded the most improved 2nd-year Political Science student. He led a delegation to a model United Nation’s Assembly in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2001, where he successfully passed a resolution in the general assembly.
Akil has been Vice President of the Barbados Labour Party’s League of Young Socialist from 2009 to 2013. From the tender age of eighteen, he was selected as a platform speaker in the 2003 general election campaign of Dame Billie Miller. He also was a platform speaker for Mr. Rudy Grant during the 2008 general election campaign. Despite suffering a severe nerve injury in a near-tragic motorcycle accident, which resulted in Akil being unable to use his left hand, Akil played a pivotal role in the 2010 bi-election campaign in the parish of St. John. As a result of his perseverance, Akil received the Young Socialists Award at the Barbados Labour Party’s 2010 Annual conference. The following year, he received the Barbados Labour Party’s Youth Award, which is distinguished as the party’s highest youth honour. During the 2013 general election campaign, he was responsible for coordinating the BLP St. Michael West youth campaign team and served as platform speaker for Reverend Joseph Atherley.
Akil coordinated the largest youth group in Barbados called “The Flame” every Friday night at Thankful Family Church, where he ministered to over 100 of our nation’s youth for two years.
